👻 CAMPFIRE STORIES 👻
CAMPFIRE STORIES
FINISHED!
I did it! we're done! well for now at least, I'll obviously do any revisions you'd like to see :D

super happy with how everything came out! let's do another one.. pleeeaaaaase 🥺
I've moved all the final illustrations I sent over earlier to here, so you can look at everything in one go!

there are notes under each image!
COVER
I don't know why I didn't come up with this while doing the sketch, but why not a smoke-ghost? I think it looks pretty cool.

and yes, that's a new border to boot :D
THE MAP
I thought it would be best to keep everything campfire themed, so here we go.
we have to figure out what to do with the centre of the image, since it'll be spread out over 2 pages and 11 and 13 fall too close to the split. I'll adjust it when you've placed it in the template, so it's easier to see what needs to be shifted.
note: why do the smallest states have the longest names? and why did you people give up drawing cool borders the further west you go???
01 THE DEADWOODS GHOST HUNTING CLUB
no notes! I usually draw cute ghosts, but this fella is pretty terrifying...
02 SEEDLING
I'm beyond happy with how this came out, this would make an awesome book cover too.
03 IT HAD RED EYES
you've seen this already, but still one of my favorites of this book!
04 THE RENTAL CABIN
I love love love this one too, I love the off-kilter composition.
05 A NIGHT AT PETEYS PIZZA
This one changed a bit compared to the sketch, I couldn't get the original idea right, everything just looked too goofy. But I think this works really well and is a lot creepier than the initial idea.
06 A PAINTING IN RED
no notes, but I love the simplicity of this idea.
07 they came from the corn
love this one too! it's almost exactly the same as the sketch.
08 mystery shop
I changed the angle of the composition slightly to make it a bit more dramatic. if you look closely you'll find a lot of easter eggs in here :)
09 fish breath
I pulled the camera a bit closer so we could see this lovely girl a bit better and I made her a bit fishier too 🐠
10 Penny Eyes
I gave this one a little bit more color and added the requested one-eyed cat
11 tunnel terror
I've never been to New York, but if movies are to be believed I think the daily commutes there are pretty on par with what is depicted here
12 Mademoiselle
another one of my favorites. I love the color palette and how terrifying this makes her monster version in comparison.
13 VISITOR
I honestly thought this would be the most boring illustration in the book, but it turned into one of my favorites. It has a rural exorcist vibe
14 the boy who played with fire
feeling HOT HOT HOT
15 press play
This is the last time I'm ordering a Toshiba from AliExpress.
16 mountain of monsters
I made the Yeti less monstrous and more Yeti-ous. I really really like this one.
17 imaginary friend
Hi-diddly-ho, neighborino
18 PREY
I've changed Celcius to Fahrenheit, since the story takes place in the US.
19 URBAN EXPLORERS
I made this one quite broken on purpose, I love digital artefacts and I'll take any chance i can get to use them!
easter egg: the coordinates in the bottom left corner lead to a place cozily named: "Apache Death Cave" in Arizona.
20 the man with no face
I think this turned out pretty well! in the sense that it feels pretty gruesome without actually showing anything specifically.

that's it for now! once you guys get me feedback/approval of the remaining images I'll get right on it!
👇 PREVIOUS UPDATES 👇
heya!

a small update for you guys. I've done the revisions to one of the sketches, but I'm still missing the updated info for one of the stories.

I've also mocked up a cover and an idea for the spread!
lesgo
18 - PREY
I made the deer a lot more otherworldly, I thought it might be cool to have some ribs poking out too.
COVER SKETCH
So I thought it would be a good idea to keep it in line with the first book, while still being noticeably different. We can do a new border pattern too, but I do quite like it as it is. I can change up the monsters mouth and hands a bit more too to differentiate it from the previous book!
SPREAD SKETCH
I just sloppily copy pasted the map from the PDF you sent over, in the final version it will obviously not look like this :D

I thought it would be cool to show a monstrous campfire and some left over camping items, but no campers. a little bit of environmental storytelling; what happened to the campers?

that's it for now!
👇 PREVIOUS UPDATES 👇
aaaaaand we're back!

I'm super excited about each and every sketch. I thought the first book was a good fit, but this one is an ever better fit.

some are in a pretty rough state but all of them are good enough to get the point across! and don't worry about the color just yet, I'll add some color here and there eventually!

There's a lot to look at so buckle up!

there are notes under each set of images
SKETCHES
THE DEADWOODS GHOST HUNTING CLUB
no real notes here, I love spooky ghosts. you may recognize this fella from one of the cover sketches I did for book 1.
SEEDLING
this one is a little bit more conceptual and also in the roughest state. Instead of showing a monsterous plant I thought it could be cool to see the boy being consumed by leaves (or at least that's implied)
IT HAD RED EYES
love this guy! instead of having him on top of a tree I thought a lamppost would be cool too, you know as moth(man)'s are attracted to light. If the story takes place in the woods I can change it to a tree of course.
THE RENTAL CABIN
no notes here! love the composition and creepy black eyed kids are always a joy to see outside of your window.
A NIGHT AT PETEY’S PIZZA
I went for a wolfish animatronic, but we can change it to whatever you like. this one will look super cool once I get all the lighting effects done.
A PAINTING IN RED
instead of showing the monster in full view (since most of the illustrations have the monster depicted) I thought it would be cool to show the wolfmonster coming out of the painting.
THEY CAME FROM THE CORN
this could be a movie poster honestly
MR. MURDOCH’S MYSTERY SHOP
all the curiosities (besides the haunted bottle) are mostly placeholder for sketch purposes, I'll add weird things when we start finalizing the image
FISH BREATH
mist and a freaky mermaid? i'm game!
PENNY EYES
love this one! (but I'm a cat person so I might be biased)
BEWARE THE TUNNEL TERROR
I'm a big fan of the Dutch Angle here (me being Dutch has nothing to do with that though)
MADEMOISELLE MADEMOISELLE
not much to add here just 2 perfectly normal french girls
VISITOR
no notes here, could also be a movie poster
THE BOY WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE
I love the energy in this one, and I thought it could be cool to see hints of the boys face melting, while still keeping it mostly obscured
PRESS PLAY
pretty self explanatory
AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MONSTERS
you thought we were done? not Yeti
IMAGINARY FRIEND
the environment is from a personal drawing I did a couple of years ago, and I thought it was perfect for this scene. I love the "friend" too.
PREY
same as the previous one, especially cool since the idea was inspired by one of my drawings!

URBAN EXPLORERS
I quickly took a screenshot of a youtube page for sketch purposes, but I thought it would be cool to see a youtube-like page, including the video description and maybe a comment or two.
THE MAN WITH NO FACE
I'd love to show the guy up close, and I thought this would be a nice way to still make him look gruesome without making everything too gory. mostly inspired by the flavor images in the briefing.
and that's it! I'm super happy with the sketches as they are already, but as always feel free to give me any notes you may have!
